The WIPO Coordination Office in New York functions as WIPO's liaison to the United Nations and the related community of diplomats and agencies in New York, and has operated as such for over 40 years.
Warning – Phone Scam

The phone number of the WIPO Office in New York is sometimes being illegitimately used to acquire information or request payment. These “spoofing” calls are scams that bear no connection to WIPO or to any of our services.

If you receive a phone call from WIPO’s New York Office which is suspicious, please contact us.  And if you are a user of US Patent and Trademark services we also strongly recommend that you reach out to the USPTO.

WIPO will never solicit any kind of payment by telephone and outside its legitimate service areas.

Activities

The Office achieves its objectives and fulfills its mandate by undertaking the following activities, amongst others:

  • Ensures WIPO’s engagement in a wide range of UN processes and negotiations, such as the post 2015 Development Agenda and the development of sustainable goals
  • Monitors the work of the UN main committees, namely: second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth committees, UNCITRAL and ECOSOC
  • Participates as an observer in meetings on other global challenges such as: food security, the “green economy”, the rights of people with disabilities and public health and promotes WIPO’s work in these areas.
  • Training of UN diplomats on IP
  • Outreach to the various departments of the UN Secretariat and representatives of Permanent Missions to the UN in New York to support an increased understanding of IP

Events

Workshops for United Nations diplomats

The Office holds periodical workshops on the basics of intellectual property for the benefit of UN diplomats and officials. The office also collaborates with UNITAR, New York office in this effort.

Topical events at the United Nations

The Office organizes for the UN community events on topical subjects with intellectual property dimension at the UN, including on public health, agriculture, climate change, traditional and indigenous knowledge and traditional cultural expressions.
