World IP Day Event: IP in the Park

On April 24, 2018, the Technological Park of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the WIPO Brazil Office (WBO) organized the second edition of the event “IP in the Park”, that celebrates World Intellectual Property (IP) Day.
Biomedicine researcher and UFRJ Professor Bartira Bergmann was honored for her innovative performance in researching and patenting a pharmaceutical treatment for Leishmaniasis. The company Technip FMC and the SME Biotecam were also honored as residents of the Park with the largest number of patents filed.
The Rio Tech Park is a 350,000 square-meter space within the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. It is dedicated to innovation and to public-private partnerships and hosts research centers for innovative enterprises, a business incubator, and spaces for the development of integration and entrepreneurship.

During the first of two roundtables, Ms. Nascimento, Vice-dean of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) mentioned that the university has noted an increase in the number of woman professors leading research projects.
Mr. Graça Aranha, Regional Director of the WIPO Brazil Office, pointed out figures indicating a disparity between the feminine and masculine names listed in patent files and rates of academic production, even though female participation has grown.
Mr. Felipe Augusto Melo de Oliveira, General Coordinator of INPI for Promotion and Innovation of the National Institute of Industrial Property, presented a selection of initiatives aimed at improving the processes of the institute and the modernization of its technology information system.
Mr. José Carlos Pinto, Director of the Tech Park, mentioned that the Park has seen a great increase in the number of patents and trademarks filed by residents.
Tatiana Campello the Director of the Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI), pointed out that there is a larger female presence in academic activity at the master’s level of, whereas men dominate such activity at the PhD level, and that there is a need to create policies that will facilitate the access of minorities to areas of research where they currently do not have a significant presence.
Mr. Paulo Parente Marques Mendes, President of the Commission for Intellectual Property and Combatting Piracy of the Rio de Janeiro Section of the Brazilian Bar, congratulated all present and announced upcoming events on IP organized by the Bar.
Ms. Marcela Trigo, President of the Licensing Executive Society (LES) in Brazil, mentioned that LES will now focus on start-ups and a younger audience.
Roundtable
During the second part of the event, a roundtable took place on the role of IP in fostering public-private partnerships. The roundtable was coordinated by Evelyn Montellano, Consultant from Di Blasi, Parente and Partners, and included the following participants:
- Shirley Coutinho, Coordinator of the Innovation Agency of the Catholic University of Rio (PUC-Rio) and Vice President of the National Forum of Managers on Innovation and Technology Transfer;
- Bianca de Castro Leyen, Sectorial Manager on IP for the Brazilian Petrol Agency (Petrobras); ,
- Marcio Spínola, Manager of Geosciences and representative of the companies hosted by the technological park; ,
- Ricardo Amaral Remer, Partner of Biotecam, and Vagner Latsch, Coordinator of patents form INPI.
