Brazilian IP Attorneys should focus on what really matters, says Regional Director of the WIPO Brazil Office

June 25, 2018

On June 13, 2018, during an event organized by the Intellectual Property Association of São Paulo (ASPI), Mr. José Graça Aranha, Regional Director of the WIPO Brazil Office, spoke about “Patents:  Backlog, its Effects and the International Experience.”

Some 45 intellectual property (IP) agents, representing a broad range of Brazilian law firms, attended the event.

Mr. Graça Aranha spoke about the patent system in Brazil, the PCT and new trends in the field of patents.  He also discussed possible solutions to overcoming the patent examination backlog in Brazil—currently 15 years—including the Brazilian Government’s proposal to address this backlog through the granting of all applications in a single summary procedure.

During a lively debate, Mr. Graça Aranha urged IP agents and associations across Brazil to focus more on this matter which is of extreme importance to the country’s national social and economic development.
