Global Network on Intellectual Property (IP) Academies
In recent years, several countries have taken a dynamic approach to intellectual property (IP) education through the establishment of national IP Academies or training institutes. These institutes encourage universities, innovation-based companies, creative industries and IP professionals to take part in IP education programs.
The Global Network of IP Academies (GNIPA) facilitates international cooperation and exchange of experience in IP education. Such an exchange is key to addressing a common challenge of IP educational institutions: imparting the necessary skills for effective IP management in a globalized world economy with rapidly changing technologies and a complex IP system.
Background
The Global Network of IP Academies was created in 2007 as a result of the first ever Symposium of IP Academies co-organized by WIPO and National Institute for Industrial Property of Brazil. Yearly symposia of national IP academies have been held ever since:
- Fifth Symposium (Washington D.C., August 23 to 25, 2011)
- Fourth Symposium (Seoul, August 24 to 26, 2010)
- Third Symposium (Munich, June 9 and 10, 2009)
- Second Symposium (Beijing, May 8 and 9, 2008)
- First Symposium (Rio de Janeiro, March 21 to 23, 2007)
Secretariat
The Secretariat is composed of the WIPO Academy, the current host and the next host of the GNIPA Symposium.
Membership
Any IP academy/training center acting as a national authoritative focal point of IP education and research may join the Global Network of IP Academies by filling out the membership application form
