The World’s Top 10 Innovation Hotspots

These are the ten hotspots with most inventive activity, based on the number of international patent applications filed between 2011 and 2015.
The ranking is part of the Global Innovation Index 2017, which provides detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 127 countries and economies around the world.
10th – Paris, France
13,461 international patent applications filed, of which 7.7% by top applicant L’Oréal. The main field of technology was transport, which made up 8.1% of all filings.
9th – Nagoya, Japan
13,515 international patent applications filed, of which 42.4% by top applicant Toyota. The main field of technology was transport, which made up 13% of all filings.
8th – Boston-Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States of America
13,819 international patent applications filed, of which 6.1% by top applicant Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). The main field of technology was pharmaceuticals, which made up 12.4% of all filings.
7th – Beijing, China
15,185 international patent applications filed, of which 14.1% by top applicant BOE Technology Group. The main field of technology was digital communication, which made up 22.6% of all filings.
6th – San Diego, California, United States of America
16,908 international patent applications filed, of which 56.1% by top applicant Qualcomm. The main field of technology was digital communication, which made up 23.6% of all filings.
5th – Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto, Japan
23,512 international patent applications filed, of which 10.4% by top applicant Murata Manufacturing. The main field of technology was electrical machinery, apparatus and energy, which made up 8.3% of all filings.
4th – Seoul, Republic of Korea
34,187 international patent applications filed, of which 16.6% by top applicant LG Electronics. The main field of technology was digital communication, which made up 10.4% of all filings.
3rd – San Jose-San Francisco, California, United States of America
34,324 international patent applications filed, of which 6.5% by top applicant Google. The main field of technology was computer technology, which made up 18.3% of all filings.
2nd – Shenzhen-Hong Kong, China
41,218 international patent filings, of which 32.4% were filed by top applicant ZTE Corporation. The main field of technology was digital communication, which made up a 41.2% of all filings.
1st – Tokyo-Yokohama, Japan
94,079 international patents applications filed, of which 6.4% by top applicant Mitsubishi Electric. The main field of technology was electrical machinery apparatus and energy, which made up 6.3% of all filings.
