WIPO in collaboration with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) is implementing the above mentioned project in the United Republic of Tanzania. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the economic, social, cultural and technology development of the beneficiary countries and, ultimately, to alleviate poverty. The outcome of the project is enhanced human resource capacities able to deal with the broad range of requirements for the effective use of Intellectual Property (IP) for development in developing countries, LDCs and countries with economies in transition. In July 2017, a National Experts Group (NEG) Meeting was held in Dar es Salaam. The aim was to deliberate and select appropriate technologies for the two prioritized areas which were selected in 2016 and search request sent to WIPO to find the information concerning technologies appropriate for these identified areas. The international expert analyzed the information from the search report and recommended which technologies could be appropriate for the concerned area. These proposed technologies were deliberated and one technology was agreed upon for each identified challenge. The technologies selected include: 1. Extraction of Semi Refined Carrageenan (SRC) from seaweeds; 2. Aquaculture. Business Plans (BPs) should be developed for the two identified technologies. The National expert with the assistance of a Consultant from WIPO is in the process of developing the Business Plans. In doing so, there is a need to collect some information which could assist in their preparation. Zanzibar being the major producer of seaweeds in Tanzania has been earmarked for the collection of information for the preparation of the BPs.
