The Vienna Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries for the Decade 2014-2024 emphasizes the role of science, technology and innovation plays in achieving structural economic transformation, productive capacity development and value addition in landlocked developing countries, and recommends supporting the efforts of landlocked developing countries to improve their productive capacities and create economic diversification and contributing to the efforts of landlocked developing countries to share innovative technologies, scientific knowledge and technical know-how and best practices.
Moreover, the Istanbul Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2011-2020 recommends providing assistance to landlocked least developed countries given their specific development challenges and vulnerabilities.
WIPO has been providing technical assistance and services to LLDCs, which includes also a number of LDCs, through its Division for Least Developed Countries and other sectors of the Organization, given the particular needs of landlocked developing and least developed countries in the area of intellectual property, innovation and technological capacity building.
It attaches high importance to its participation in the United Nations (UN) Organizations joint efforts to support the development endeavours of LDCs, many of whom are landlocked countries. WIPO has also been invited and actively engaged in the discussion of the Inter Agency Consultative Group Meetings of the UN system and International Organizations on the implementation of the Vienna Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries for the Decade 2014–2024 (VPoA). WIPO participated in June 2018 in the Inaugural Conference of the International Think Tank for LLDCs (ITT for LLDCs), an intergovernmental organization with an observer status in the UN General Assembly, mandated to conduct research and provide policy advice on particular needs and challenges faced by |
