During the WIPO and ESCAP joint regional meeting which took place in Bangkok from November 6 to 8, 2017, delegation of Myanmar and Lao PDR identified the need for technological capacity building through enancing the role of IP tools for trade capacity building and business competitiveness in the chamber of commerce and industry. Accordingly, concerned WIPO official discussed with the relevant officials of Myanmar and Lao PDR to set out the follow up national activity to be implemented under a national project. It was proposed to organize as a first step a multi-stakeholder national consultation to discuss the need areas and identify specific sectors for which a framework strategy paper will be prepared as a deliverable under individual country project for Myanmar and Lao PDR. For the two national consultation meetings, it is proposed that Dr. Viraj Perera, Chief Executive Officer, PlaTCOM Ventures of Malaysia which is an organization set up by the government of Malaysia to support industry and business in the area of innovation and commercialization of IPRs, to participate in this national event as a speaker and also be involved together with the responsible WIPO official in the formulation of the strategy document for the chamber of commerce and industry of Myanmar and Lao PDR. The proposed national consultations will be organized by WIPO in cooperation with the chamber of commerce and industry with the support from intellectual property office and the relevant government ministries. The above meetings are proposed back to back with a view to saving the cost for travel and other related expenses for the WIPO official and the international speaker. The cost of this activity will be borne by the approved budget of the Division for Least Developed Countries (Strengthened cooperation arrangements with institutions in Developing countries, LDCs and countries in transition tailored to their needs). |
