Title: National Project under the framework of the WIPO/Sida Training Program - Copyright for Development: Sensitizing and Enhancing Intellectual Property Knowledge among Secondary School Writers Associations in Malawi
Description: Reference is made to Joint WIPO-Sida Follow-up to the Training and Advisory Program on Intellectual Property Rights in the Global Economy for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs); Copyright for Development which took place in Lilongwe, Malawi, from March 18 to 23, 2018. This Follow-up meeting was undertaken in cooperation with the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA).
The above mentioned Follow-up meeting provided a forum for the discussion of national country projects in the area of intellectual property, including copyright, which were formulated during the Stockholm phase of the Training Program. The meeting also enabled the identification of a number of projects with medium and long term implementation timelines for further support and follow up by the WIPO Division for Least Developed Countries as per the approved Divisional Work Plan for 2018.
In this context, the Division for Least Developed Countries has received a request from COSOMA to provide financial support to the implementation of a national Project in Malawi titled “Sensitizing and Enhancing Intellectual Property Knowledge among Secondary School Writers Associations in Malawi”.
The objective of the project is to organize intellectual property awareness raising activities in six secondary schools in Malawi (in three different regions) in order to equip the students with knowledge on the key facets of IP, and in particular copyright, in order to encourage and promote their creative endeavors.
The national project has been conceptualized by one of the participants from Malawi - Mr. Christopher Chitukula, Vice President, Malawi Writers Union. However, for operational reasons and to ensure future sustainability, the national partner for the implementation of the project will be COSOMA. In particular, the project will be spearheaded on the national level by Ms. Dora Makwinja, Copyright Administrator and Executive Director for COSOMA.
