October 6, 2023

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) successfully organized a Benchbook Launch and National Judicial Colloquium on IP Adjudication in the Philippines, from August 16 to 18, 2023 in Manila, Philippines.  In collaboration with the Supreme Court of the Philippines, the Philippine Judicial Academy, and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), WIPO marked the launch of the volume of the Intellectual Property Benchbook Series dedicated to IP Adjudication in the Philippines.  Held alongside the Launch, a Colloquium brought together members of the Philippines judiciary to exchange regional experiences and enhance capacities in dealing with emerging issues in IP disputes.

With 116 judges from the Philippine Regional Trial Courts in attendance, the Colloquium used the Benchbook as a basis for addressing both substantive and case management issues faced by judges dealing with IP cases.  In addition to 15 distinguished national speakers and moderators, the program featured presentations by the Hon. Dedar Singh Gill, High Court Judge, Supreme Court of Singapore, and the Hon. Helen Rofe, Justice, Federal Court of Australia.  The Launch and Colloquium were presided over by the Hon. Rosmari D. Carandang, Chancellor of the Philippine Judicial Academy.

The Intellectual Property Benchbook Series and the Colloquium are part of WIPO’s work to support judiciaries in their vital role of ensuring that intellectual property, innovation, and creative ecosystems are balanced and effective.
