WIPO Regional Director Participates in International Seminar on Fashion Law

January 13, 2017

On November 9, Mr. José Graça Aranha participated in the 1st International Seminar on Fashion Law organized by the Fashion Law Commission (CDMD) of the Brazilian Bar Association - Session Rio de Janeiro (OAB-RJ). During the Seminar, lawyers, professors and businesspeople from the sector discussed issues related to the fashion industry. The theme of the Seminar was "The 10 years of Fashion Law and counterfeiting in the fashion industry: past, present and future".

The president of CDMD, Ms. Deborah Portilho, highlighted the importance of the fashion industry to Brazil: "In the last ten years the fashion industry in Brazil has grown by 287%. This is the biggest growth in the world in this area”, she said.

Industrial property key for fashion

According to Deborah, of all the themes that the law of fashion encompasses, intellectual property (IP) is the most important. The fashion industry has a universe of possibilities to explore in the area of industrial property (patents, industrial designs, trademarks, indications of origin), all of which can allow entrepreneurs and creators to make a better living from their craft.

The Seminar took place in the OAB-RJ headquarters. Mr. Graça Aranha gave a lecture on the theme of “The Spread of Protective Culture of Fashion Creations by Intellectual Property”.
