Academic Meetings on IP, Innovation and Development for Latin America

January 13, 2017

On November 23 to 25, 2016, WIPO and INPI Brazil organized two events:

  • IX Academic Meeting on Intellectual Property, Innovation and Development (ENAPID); and
  • International Symposium of the Intellectual Property Academies of Latin America and the Caribbean.

During the Symposium representatives of Latin American countries had the opportunity to discuss the challenges faced by National intellectual property (IP) offices in the field of teaching and research.

The events aimed to bring together research institutions, industry, and government, in order to analyze open innovation. Some of the key issues covered included:

  • R&D
  • service provision
  • licenses from IP rights
  • technology transfer.

On the final day, Latin America countries also discussed the challenges and opportunities facing IP Academies (IPAs). IPAs are generally linked to IP offices, and offer specialized professional training, promoting the use of the IP systems and offering training courses for an external audience. In addition, IPAs promote studies and research on IP to raise the level of knowledge and skill of those involved with innovation and the IP systems of their countries.

The events took place in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. Mr. Graça Aranha, Regional Director of WBO, participated in the debates
