INPI and JPO Sign PPH Agreement
June 22, 2017
INPI President, Luiz Otávio Pimentel, and the President of the Japanese Patent Office (JPO), Yoshinori Komiya, signed a Joint Declaration to formalize a pilot project on the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) on March 16. Thanks to the PPH, Brazilians will be able to use the results of the patent application examinations conducted at INPI in Japan and vice versa.
In the PPH pilot, INPI will only accept applications for patents related to Information Technology. In turn, Japan will accept requests in any field.
Brazil already has a PPH pilot with the United States, which began on January 11, 2016 and the expected duration is also two years. So far, in the PPH between the United States and Brazil, 40 applications have already been included, 38 of which are in the INPI and two in the USPTO.
The discussion is also underway to carry out a pilot PPH with the European Patent Office (EPO) and with some countries in Latin America.
