First Brazilian Conference on Law and Art
June 5, 2018
From May 16-18, 2018, over 350 students and authorities from Brazil and abroad gathered in the Centro Cultural Ariano Suassuna in João Pessoa, Paraiba, to discuss subjects related to the protection of arts.
Although Brazil has a good level of production and trade in the field of visual arts, there is a lack of awareness of the corresponding legislation. Since 2018 is the European year of Cultural Heritage, national stakeholders considered it a good opportunity to bring the legal community together to promote debate and discuss best practices with international experts.
IP and the visual arts
The objective of the Conference was to discuss emerging topics related to visual arts, such as:
- the protection of national cultural and artistic heritage,
- copyright and inheritance,

- minors in arts,

- heritage and the environment and arbitration in cases of restitution of works of art.
It was aimed at managers, researchers, academics, diplomats, artists, art collectors, academia, representatives from museums, art galleries, foundations and auction houses from Brazil and abroad.
Ms. Isabella Pimentel, Counsellor of the WIPO Brazil Office (WBO), was present at the round table on Art and Institutions’ law, where she delivered a presentation on the recent discussions on artists’ resale rights in the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights.
Side events to the conference included exhibits by local artists, book launches, two musical concerts, and a competition of papers on arts and law prepared by young researchers.
