June 25, 2015
The Chinese version of the report "Study on the Impact of Enhanced Copyright Protection on the Porcelain Industry in Dehua, China" (Dehua Project) was officially published in Xiamen on June 11, 2015. About 100 participants were present at the publication ceremony, including senior government officials at both central and local levels, staff from WIPO headquarters and WIPO China Office, members of the drafting group and working group of the Dehua Program, representatives from local copyright offices, as well as representatives of collective management societies and members of the media.
Dehua is a county with a population of 319,700 and it is known as the birthplace of China's pottery culture. The main industry in Dehua is ceramic manufacturing and the county is one of the three ancient capitals of Chinese porcelain. In recent years, Dehua ceramic manufacturers have explored a new way of furthering the development of the porcelain industry by focusing on efficient and effective copyright protection. The Report shows that the Dehua experience is a very convincing example of how intellectual property protection can positively impact economic development in a developing country.
