WIPO Global IP Services Promoted in Shanghai

Two workshops, both entitled “Effective Utilization of WIPO Global Intellectual Property Services” took place from 9-12 November, 2015 in Shanghai. Over 100 representatives from the private sector and local IP authorities participated.

Mr. John Sandage, Deputy Director General of WIPO and Mr. Lu Guoqiang, Director General of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration delivered opening speeches. In addition to introducing the latest developments in the PCT , Madrid, and Hague Systems, Mr. Sandage stressed that the workshops marked a new step forwards in the cooperation between the WIPO Office in China (WOC) and the Shanghai Municipal Government. He also encouraged participants to make increased use of WIPO global IP services.

Mr. Lu expressed appreciation to WIPO for its continuous support to Shanghai in the field of intellectual property, which he called conducive to Shanghai’s economic and technological progress. Shanghai is willing to strengthen the cooperation between the two sides. He also stressed the workshops would benefit enterprises not only from Shanghai but also from the Yangtze Delta region.

Presentations

The following presentations were given:

  • Mr. Chen Hongbing, Director of the WOC, gave a presentation on WIPO,WOC and its work.
  • Mr. Yu Zhilong, Legal Officer, PCT Legal Affairs Section, PCT Legal Division, Patent and Technology Sector.
  • Mr. Wang Ye, WIPO Consultant, introduced the Madrid System and outlined some of the latest developments to the System.
  • Mr. Zhu Bin, Examiner, Industrial Design Examination Department, State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) delivered presentations on the Hague System for Industrial Design Registration.
  • Mr. Zhuang Jialin, Senior IP Counsel from ZTE Corporation and Mr. Ding Chenggang, Senior Manager of Legal Department of Shanghai Jahwa Abt Association Inc, representing users of PCT and Madrid System in China, shared their experiences of WIPO services.
  • Mr. Wang Zhenfa, Senior partner at the Kangxin IP Agency and Ms. Wang Wei, Deputy General Manager of Shanghai BTA IP Agency, shared their insights regarding how to make better use of the PCT and Madrid Systems.

In addition to presentations, there was lively interaction between speakers and the audience. Participants demonstrated a keen interest in topics related to WIPO’s global IP services. Many also indicated their intentions to take part in systematic training sessions on the same topics.
