A Roving Seminar on the Madrid System

On June 22 and 24, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) jointly hosted a Roving Seminar on the Madrid System for International Registration of Trademarks in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, and Fuzhou, Fujian Province.

The Madrid System of International Trademark Registration is one of the global intellectual property service systems managed by WIPO. It is also one of the important ways for Chinese enterprises to apply for registration and protect their trademarks overseas. The Roving Seminar aims to enhance Chinese users' knowledge and understanding of the Madrid System, and to promote their awareness of the international layout of trademarks and overseas protection of brands.

Overcoming the impact of COVID-19 situation, the Roving Seminar invited experts from Trademark Office of CNIPA and WIPO to give presentations in person or online, focusing on the latest development of the Madrid System, Trademark Office' practice on the examination of Madrid application, tips on the filing of Madrid application, Madrid electronic tools and customer service.

The Roving Seminar was co-sponsored by the Intellectual Property Service Promotion Center of Sichuan Province, the Administration for Market Regulation of Sichuan Province (Intellectual Property Office), the Sichuan Tianfu New Area Management Committee, and the Intellectual Property Office of Fujian Province. More than 200 representatives from the two places attended the seminar and exchanged views with the speakers about their problems in the process of trademark application and protection. The Roving Seminar will further promote Chinese users to make better use of the Madrid System to improve their overseas brand protection ability and international market competitiveness, which will help enterprises from Sichuan and Fujian "go global".
