WIPO China: WIPO-NCAC Copyright Awards Unveiled
October 18, 2021
On October 16 to 18, 2021, the 8th China International Copyright Expo (CICE), hosted by the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) with the support of the Zhejiang Provincial Copyright Administration and the People's Government of Hangzhou Municipality, was held in Hangzhou. Ms. Liu Hua, Director of WIPO Office in China (WOC), attended the Opening Ceremony and delivered a speech.
Liu Hua pointed out that China's copyright protection is a part of successful IP story of China, which is of national strategic importance and concerns national cultural productivity, creativity and soft power.
She commended China's tremendous achievements in the field of innovation and creativity especially the cultural and creative industries. In 2019, the added value of China's copyright industry reached 7.32 trillion yuan, accounting for 7.39% of GDP. In the Global Innovation Index 2021 (GII) released by WIPO, China ranks the 12th in the rating, 2 places up from the GII 2020, being the only upper middle income economies breaking into the top 15,and maintains leadership in 10 indicators including creative good export. These outstanding achievements are attributed to the Chinese government's long-standing and consistent efforts and investment in innovation and creativity, China's open innovation practices, the building of modern and effective IP ecosystem in China, and the ever-improving Chinese copyright legal system, social service system and the development environment of the copyright industry.
She stressed that copyright, as one of the three traditional pillars of IP, has always been the focus of WIPO's work, and that WIPO has launched a series of service platforms, such as WIPO for Creators, WIPO Connect and WIPO Alert, to help member states carry out copyright protection and management work. WIPO will continue to explore new models of cooperation in the field of copyright and innovate products and services.
At the Opening Ceremony, WIPO and NCAC jointly unveiled the 2020 WIPO-NCAC Copyright Awards. Ms. Liu Hua presented the awards to the winners. Please see the appendix for the list of winners.
Established in 2008 and co-sponsored by WIPO and NCAC, WIPO-NCAC Copyright Award is selected once every two years as the highest award in the field of copyright in China and the only international award in the field of copyright in China. The WIPO-NCAC Copyright Award consists of four categories of awards, including the Creativity Award, the Copyright Utilization Award, the Copyright Protection Award and the Copyright Administration & Management Award.
At the Copyright Expo, WIPO set up a booth and jointly released with NCAC the report on the Best Case Study on enhanced copyright utilization and protection for the promotion of Wujiang Silk Industry (Wujiang Silk Industry Case Study)-"Copyright Enables the Growth of Silk Industry- A Study of Copyright Protection and High-quality Development of Wujiang Silk Industry", marking the successful conclusion of the investigation and research work carried out by both parties on copyright empowering the high-quality development of Wujiang Silk.
