Liu Hua mentioned that intellectual property (IP) protection is an institutional design to promote scientific & technological innovation, as well as an important safeguard for the development of the Greater Bay Area. According to the WIPO Global Innovation Index (GII) 2022, Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou ranked second in the world's top science and technology clusters. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Greater Bay Area have played an important role in boosting the local economy via IP commercialization, and the Guangzhou Ehang and Shenzhen Shokz were selected by WIPO as best cases of SMEs using IP to turn ideas into business opportunities and generate value.

Liu Hua said that the WIPO Virtual Exhibition on Geographical Indications, as an important part of the 2021 GBAIP Trade Expo, allowed participants to learn more about the latest developments in the use and protection of geographical indication (GI) products around the world. This year's GBAIP Trade Expo has expanded the scope of GI products display, fully reflecting the important role of GI products in the economic and trade development of the Greater Bay Area. China is rich in GI resources and has great potential to utilize and protect GIs. The Madrid International Trademark Registration System and the Lisbon System of International Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications administered by WIPO can provide international registration and protection for GIs in an economical, convenient and efficient manner.
