Series of Roundtables 2023 with Media

On March 21, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Office in China (WOC) held a Roundtable with Media in Beijing. Representatives from more than 20 media attended the Roundtable.

Ms. Liu Hua, Director of WOC elaborated on the concept of "1 golden knowledge asset + 5 sets of golden keys", which is widely disseminated by WIPO in the Chinese market, and outlined the highlights of WOC's work in 2022 and the work priorities of WOC for 2023. Ms. Liu called on the media to provide in-depth coverage of WIPO's work and to share the wealth of knowledge and the rich resources and diverse ways of collaboration that its public-private partnership platforms offer. She hoped that media coverage would better showcase the dynamism and humanity of Chinese society, and share the revolutionary changes and impact of innovation and creation driven by IP. Ms. Liu thanked the media for their support of the WOC in the past and called for greater collaboration in the future to focus on Focus on IP and the huge changes that innovation and creativity have brought to humanity.

Mr. Li Zhihui, Vice President of China Intellectual Property News (CIPN), said that CIPN is committed to telling the story of IP and spreading the voice of IP of China. Since its establishment in 2014, the WOC has strongly supported China's IP work and has established a deep friendship and good cooperation with the CIPN. Mr. Li Jie, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of China Copyright Magazine, mentioned that the WOC is an important bridge between China and foreign countries concerning the IP development, the China Copyright Magazine provides a large amount of copyright information and industry development reports both at home and abroad, and the two sides have been cooperating well for a long time. Ms. Han Bingxi, Deputy Director of the Brand Promotion Department of People's Forum Magazine of the People's Daily, said that People's Daily is a theoretical media with a focus on current affairs, but it also pays great attention to policy research in the field of IP, interpreting the national IP strategy and innovation capacity, and studying various IP issues in the digital economy. She thanked Director Liu for writing an article for People's Daily and hoped for more cooperation with the WOC.

Ms. Zhang Wei, Deputy Director of the Economic News Department of Legal Daily, stated that WIPO is an amazing international organization and a main character in the coverage of the Legal Daily. Legal Daily takes IP as an important topic for retrospective coverage in major selections and wishes to strengthen cooperation with the WOC. Ms. Wang Jing , Director of the Local Information Department and Online Evaluation Department of the legaldaily.com.cn said that as a key central news website, the legaldaily.com.cn has continuously focused on IP, and wished to explore more suitable content and innovative forms of publicity in the field of IP, and strengthen cooperation with the WOC in the IP promotion. Mr. Yu Kaiyun, Deputy Secretary General of the New Media Branch of the China Economic Media Association, hoped that the association could assist WIPO in reaching out to various industries and their newspapers, so that Chinese central, state-owned enterprises and multinational enterprises will be better aware of the potential of IP and the value of WIPO. He noted that the patent applications made by Huawei and BOE through the WIPO PCT system ranked among the top in the world, showing that enterprises can go out and be protected through the channels of WIPO.

Mr. Shan Yifeng, Regional Director of Baidu App for Government Cooperation, introduced Baidu's recently released artificial intelligence product "ERNIE Bot". This product is based on Baidu’s technology that has been cultivated for more than 20 years in the field of search and artificial intelligence, covering models such as dialogue models, code generation, and text-image recognition. Mr. Xin Geng, Deputy General Manager of Public Affairs Planning Department of the Douyin Group, said that Douyin Group further strengthen the cooperation with the WOC and introduce more services and resources of the WIPO through the Toutiaohao and Tiktok platforms, especially the ten public-private partnership platforms provided by WIPO, better support innovation of middle and small-sized enterprises (SMEs), promote IP related science and showcase China's achievements in the field of IP and science and technology innovation. Ms. Zhang Tianyun, Deputy Editor of Foreign Affairs Operations on Sina Weibo, said that Sina Weibo has conducted many tracking reports on IP protection, focused on the  media strategy of the WOC, and looked forward to the voice of the WOC on Weibo.

Ms. Yu Qian, a correspondent from China Central Radio and Television Corporation (CCTV), said that CCTV will continue to focus on IP in its news coverage and will make the content more engaging, sharing new topics with media peers and working together to deliver quality coverage on a broad scale. Mr. Dai Dong, Project Manager of CCTV's Media Cooperation Department, introduced that CCTV.com is a new media platform under CCTV and has reported many well-known cases in the field of copyright protection. He expressed that media cooperation is an effective channel to resolve disputes, and he hoped to explore ways and channels to cooperate with various media. Mr. Jiao Zhe, a reporter of the China Global Television Network (CGTN) said that the CGTN's commentary column focused on the views of scholars, experts and representatives of international organizations, and published an article by Director Liu Hua last year. As a media outlet for foreign communications, CGTN will continue to strengthen its ties with the WOC to develop in-depth exchanges and cooperation in a diversified manner.

Ms. Liu Jianna, Editor of China Daily, said that China Daily has been working on international communications for 40 years and has placed great emphasis on IP-related topics. China Daily has accumulated a lot of experience in operating overseas social media accounts and hoped to cooperate with WIPO in this area. Ms. Sui Mingzhao, Editor and Correspondent of China Press, Publication, Radio and Television News (JAPRT), said that the JCPRT maintained years of cooperation with the WOC and hoped that WIPO would provide more information on national copyright laws and regulations as well as international copyright treaties, providing support to the copyright owners in adapting to the laws of different countries as they promote their works abroad. Mr. Li Xiang, an Editor of the China Market Regulation News (CMRN), said that the Chinese government's institutional reform in March this year reflected the importance it attaches to IP. In its future cooperation with WIPO, the CMRN will report more comprehensively on the latest developments of WIPO, track China's IP policies and tell good IP stories.

Ms. Zhong Yuxin, a reporter of 21st Century Business Herald, said their coverage focuses on IP protection and anti-monopoly competition, and is launching a special report and series of activities on the World IP Day. She hoped to maintain cooperation with the WOC to further strengthen the voice of IP protection and expand the scope of dissemination of IP knowledge and information. Ms. Li Danzhi, Head of the Cultural and Publicity Office of the Administrative Department of China Intellectual Property Publishing House, introduced the innovative publicity content and methods introduced by the publishing house in recent years and expressed her gratitude to the Director General of WIPO, Mr. Daren Tang for his congratulatory letter to the 11th China Intellectual Property Annual Conference. She hoped that WIPO and WOC would guide the publishing house to conduct various IP publicity activities for the community, enterprises and young people, so as to enhance the awareness of the whole society to respect and protect IP. Mr. Wei Xiaomao, Director of the Interview Center of the CIPN, said that the CIPN will continue to cooperate with WIPO in organizing the China High Level Forum on IP Protection this year. He hoped that the media could leverage their respective strengths and jointly tell the story of IP in different ways.

Ms. Duan Xinxin, Head of the Media Department of IPLEAD, mentioned that IPLEAD is a new media service platform in the field of IP, mainly focusing on the Internet ecology. It has organized celebration and promotion activities each year in line with the theme of the World IP Day. She said that the IPLEAD would continue to follow WIPO's flagship report Global Innovation Index (GII), increase the use of WIPO's databases and explore more cooperation with WIPO at the content level. Ms. Li Meng, International BD Manager of IPRdaily, mentioned that IPRdaily is a leading global provider of comprehensive IP information services, and has nearly one million global users. IPRdaily will adher to the concept of people-oriented and good IP storytelling, focusing on IP issues faced by enterprises, conducting IP trainings for industries, and creating a better future for IP. Mr.  Xiao Feng, co-founder of THINKIN, noted that WIPO's focus on women, SMEs and youth resonates strongly with the idea that IP benefits everyone and serves as a good example to society. WIPO has disseminated a wealth of IP information and indicative innovation trends for China and other countries, such as the annually released GII. Assistant Director of Media Tea Party, Ms. Li Guangquezhuoma, introduced that Media Tea Party's WeChat public account was established in 2017, and it has provided fresh, timely, in-depth and authoritative information for the media industry with a focus on the four sections of editorial, operation, convergence and copyright. She looked forward to working with the WOC and the media colleagues to develop in-depth cooperation.

All participants expressed their desire to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with WIPO and WOC and considered that the roundtable organized by the WOC not only provided a better understanding of WIPO's global service system, media strategy and work priorities, but also provided a platform for sharing IP media stories and promoting the development of IP media.
