On March 21, the WIPO Office in China (WOC) held a roundtable with associations and enterprises in Beijing, focusing on WIPO's work plan in China and two new innovation waves.
Ms. Liu Hua, Director of WOC, briefed the participants on WIPO's priorities in China, including the WIPO Global Awards and two new innovation waves. She hopes that Chinese SMEs actively apply for the Global Awards as it is more than just an honor; it also provides international promotion, recognition and visibility to enterprises. WIPO also offers a personalized mentorship program to achieve new business goals and facilitate access to funding and partnership opportunities.
Ms. Liu believes the two new innovation waves will bring breakthroughs in science and technology. One is the Digital Age innovation wave, underpinned by artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, the internet of things, big data, the metaverse and Web 3.0, and the other is the Deep Science innovation wave, built on breakthroughs in biotechnologies, nanotechnologies, new materials, and other sciences. The two waves will continue to converge, deeply transforming traditional fields and bringing new changes.
On March 29 and 30, WIPO will organize the Seventh Session of the Conversation on IP and Frontier Technologies with the theme of Metaverse. Ms. Liu calls on all to join in the transformation brought about by the development of frontier technologies and change the world together with innovation. She proposed four key words to share with the participants: Revolutionary transformation, Open cooperation, Diversified Win-Win and Responsibility taking.
Mr. He Chenqi, General Manager of Alibaba Public Affairs Department, said that the theme of this year's World IP Day is Women and IP. Alibaba has more than 200,000 employees, of which nearly 60% are women. Alibaba has received policy and technical support from WIPO. He hopes that more than 9 million SMEs on Alibaba platform could also enjoy the innovation and creation benefits from the five sets of golden keys of WIPO.
Mr. Xie Hongxing, Director of BlueTech Clean Air Alliance, spoke highly of WIPO Green, which links global green technology holders and green technology demanders to cooperate. As one of the WIPO Green partners in China, BlueTech has completed two successful projects last year, both of which have been included in the WIPO Green Yearly Review 2022 as achievements.
Ms. Ren Bin, Patent Director of Huawei Technologies, stressed that Huawei attaches great importance to innovation, and its R&D investment in the last five years has exceeded 600 billion yuan. As the largest user of the PCT system, Huawei's PCT applications are leading the world.
Mr. Li Weifeng, IP Director of Tencent Music Entertainment Group, said that Tencent Music is a frequent user of WIPO's global systems. ePCT and eMadrid have brought a lot of convenience and substantial benefits for the overseas protection of patent and trademark.
JD Group and BOE Technology Group both expressed their focus on innovation with IP. They entered into overseas markets through PCT and Madrid System. BOE's PCT applications have been close to 20,000, and is among the top ten PCT filers for seven consecutive years. WIPO's global services are important to enterprises including Midea Group, which uses the Madrid System and WIPO Lex particularly. These companies hope to use WIPO's ADR service in the future.
Ms. Wei Jing, General Manager of Shanghai SHYLON Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd., said that one of the reasons of receiving the WIPO Global Awards last year was that SHYLON used the PCT and Madrid System for global patent and trademark registration with excellent results. SHYLON's international status has been greatly enhanced in the industry and SHYLON participated in the outdoor lighting project for six venues of the Qatar World Cup. In the future, SHYLON will focus more on technological innovation with the support of WIPO and enter into more overseas markets.
Ms. Chen Fang, General Manager of Suzhou RAYCAN Technology Co., Ltd., said that after receiving the WIPO Global Awards last year, their IP value and technology value began to be recognized by the market with the 1.5-billion-yuan financing. WIPO not only granted RAYCAN an award but also supported them with a package of programs, which gave them a great help with financing, marketing and supply chain, helping RAYCAN's further development in the international market.
Mr. Yao Zhibo, General Manager of Qingdao Aibo Detection Technology Co., Ltd., said that Aibo obtained low-interest loans with IP pledge financing. With the help of the Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC), Aibo got timely start-up capital and quickly converted their R&D results into products. Some products have entered the top five in the domestic market, and some have entered into the international market.
Mr. Huang Ping, Deputy General Manager of Beijing Software and Information Services Exchange, said that the Exchange is honored that WIPO has published an article about the IP services for SMEs provided by the Exchange, who is committed to establishing a transparent trading market to promote the software and IT development in China.
Mr. Wan Jingchun, Legal and IP Director of Shenzhen Shokz Co., Ltd., said that WIPO's PCT and Madrid System have provided a convenient and cost-effective way for Shokz to register patent and trademark internationally.
Mr. Xue Peng, Vice President of Guangzhou EHang Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., said after being selected as one of the WIPO Best Cases for SMEs in 2021, EHang’ patent and PCT applications continuously increased. EHang was awarded as an IP demonstration enterprise by CNIPA and also won the Patent Gold Awards in Guangdong Province.
Mr. Cheng Peng, IP Manager of Beijing ForwardX Robotics Co., Ltd., said that ForwardX has filed many patent and trademark applications through WIPO's service systems at a very early stage. In 2022, ForwardX was shortlisted for the Global Awards Top 20. ForwardX will use more WIPO resources to achieve development in the future.
Mr. He Zhenfu, Vice Chairman of China Association of Inventions (CAI), said that similar to WIPO, CAI provides IP services for inventors and enterprises. WIPO has set up three awards at the National Exhibition of Inventions hosted by CAI, namely the WIPO Awards for Best Invention, the Best Women Invention and the Best Youth Invention. CAI and WOC successfully held the Roundtable for Women Inventors, Scientists and Entrepreneurs in the New Era.
Ms. Zhang Xueli, Vice President of the Patent Protection Association of China, said that through the “one gold mine plus five sets of golden keys”, she felt that WIPO had provided much support and help to Chinese enterprises.
Mr. Wu Dongping, Secretary General of China Trademark Association (CTA), said that as an observer of WIPO, with the strong support of WIPO, the CTA has efficiently helped enterprises to register trademark internationally through the Madrid system.
Ms. Shen Peilan, Director of the Treaty and Law Division of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), said that whenever she heard about WIPO's "five sets of golden keys", she had a refreshing understanding. CCPIT is a permanent observer of WIPO, and both parties have good cooperation in all aspects.
Mr. Huang Yongwei, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of China Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, said that the Association attaches great importance to the IP development of enterprises. He hopes to strengthen communication and cooperation with WIPO and support SMEs to enhance their market competitiveness for overseas development.
The participants appreciated WIPO and WOC for the services provided to Chinese enterprises, as well as the Roundtable for communication and further understanding of WIPO's strategies and service systems. They hope to further use WIPO's services, products and resources to improve the global IP layout and facilitate the international development of Chinese enterprises.
