Nanning, September 17 - The 20th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) featured a thematic side event titled "Institutional Opening-up for New Regional Economic Growth."
Ms. Wang Binying, Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), delivered a compelling keynote address under the topic of "Enhancing Intellectual Property Protection to Boost New Developments in Economic, Trade, and Investment Cooperation." She identified three pivotal trends shaping the landscape of intellectual property development and global economic dynamics:
Frontier Technologies: The rapid advancement of cutting-edge technologies is influencing the global intellectual property landscape. This trend emphasizes the importance of adapting intellectual property laws to accommodate new technologies and innovations.
Safeguarding Investments through Intellectual Property: Intellectual property protection is increasingly viewed as a means to secure investments. Ensuring strong intellectual property rights can attract investment and encourage innovation.
Shift of Innovation Centers Towards Asia: Asia is emerging as a significant hub for innovation. As innovation centers shift towards Asia, there is a need for countries in the region to strengthen their intellectual property frameworks and collaborate internationally.
Wang Binying stressed the necessity of continuously improving intellectual property laws and fostering international cooperation to adapt to these changing trends. She commended China and the ASEAN region for their solid collaboration in building intellectual property legal systems, strengthening enforcement mechanisms, and enhancing information exchange. These efforts were seen as crucial for regional economic integration and the protection of innovation.
In addition to her address at the thematic side event, Wang Binying also attended the Opening Ceremony of the 20th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO).
At the meeting, Mr. Liu Ning, Party Secretary of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region advocated for collaborative efforts to energize regional economic integration through institutional opening-up. Mr. Li Fei, Vice Minister of Commerce emphasized China's intent to explore new avenues for trade cooperation in areas such as green, low carbon and digital economies. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary General of ASEAN, called for ongoing commitment to a predictable, transparent, non-discriminatory, rules-based and open multilateral trade system.
The thematic side event aimed to focus on the steady expansion of institutional openness in terms of regional rules, regulations, governance, and standards in the new era and new pattern. Its goal was to promote a higher level of open collaboration between China and ASEAN countries. With the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area's rapid development and the full implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), ASEAN has become China's top trading partner for three consecutive years, while China has remained ASEAN's largest trading partner for 14 years in a row. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, this event saw the participation of nearly 200 representatives, including senior officials from relevant government departments in China and ASEAN countries, East Timor, heads of consular institutions in ASEAN countries and China, international organization officials, industry experts, and business elites.
