Chongqing, November 6 - the first Belt and Road Conference on Science and Technology Exchange was opened in Southwest China's Chongqing municipality. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the Conference. Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang delivered an opening speech. Yuan Jiajun, Party Secretary of Chongqing read out the congratulatory letter from Xi Jinping. Yin Hejun, Minister of Science and Technology, presided over the Conference. Carsten Fink, the Chief Economist of WIPO, attended the Conference and delivered a keynote speech.
In his letter, Xi noted that the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation was successfully held, ushering in a new stage of high-quality development for the BRI, of which sci-tech cooperation is an important part. China will carry forward the Silk Road spirit of peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual benefit; fully implement the Belt and Road Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Action Plan, and advance international sci-tech innovation exchanges.
In his address, Carsten Fink emphasized innovation's vital role in driving economic growth and improving living standards globally. He introduced the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023, which provides an analytical tool to benchmark the innovation capacity of economies worldwide. China was particularly lauded for having the highest number of science and technology clusters - a clear sign of its innovation achievements, setting a benchmark for other developing nations involved in the BRI.
Fink outlined how China's successful innovation practices could be a model for other countries seeking to advance their own innovation and development agendas. He remarked that China's position in the GII is a testament to the international acknowledgment of its strategic advancement in intellectual property and innovation sectors.
Additionally, Fink participated in a forum dedicated to advancing high-quality development in the manufacturing sector among developing countries through open innovation. He engaged in a strategic dialogue with manufacturing entrepreneurs, exploring the utilization of WIPO's global IP services for expanding businesses' international reach through strategic overseas IP arrangements, which is crucial for fostering international growth of enterprises.
Themed “Together for Innovation, Development for All”, the first Belt and Road Conference on Science and Technology Exchange is co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, China Association for Science and Technology, Chongqing Municipal People's Government, and Sichuan Provincial People's Government. 800 guests from more than 80 countries and international organizations, including government officials, experts, scholars and entrepreneurs attended the Conference.
