Chengdu, November 23 – In a significant event at the 2023 International Copyright Expo in Chengdu, WIPO Deputy Director-General Sylvie Forbin held engaging discussions with the leaders of the five Chinese copyright collective management organizations (CMOs).
These discussions with the Music Copyright Society of China, China Audio-visual Copyright Association, China Written Works Copyright Society, China Film Copyright Association, and the Images Copyright Society of China were pivotal. Ms. Forbin delved into their organizational structures, revenue models, key beneficiaries, and the unique challenges they face in the rapidly evolving digital and AI-driven landscape.
Emphasizing the critical role of AI in copyright management, Ms. Forbin encouraged the CMOs to strengthen their collaboration with WIPO. This collaborative approach aims to integrate global best practices and the latest international experiences in copyright protection and management.
Throughout these discussions, Ms. Forbin highlighted WIPO's latest initiatives, such as the "CLIP" (Creators Learn Intellectual Property) platform. This tool is designed to support young and inexperienced creators in the music industry, demystifying intellectual property rights through simple instructional videos. She encouraged the CMOs to utilize this platform and provide constructive feedback to enhance its effectiveness further.
Additionally, Ms. Forbin brought attention to WIPO's initiatives like the toolkit for cultural heritage institutions and research/ AI-focused study. These initiatives provide valuable insights and analysis on emerging issues in the digital era. She also announced an upcoming AI information session at the next SCCR session in April 2024, inviting Member States to participate in this forward looking exchange.
The willingness of the Chinese CMOs to participate in these initiatives and to engage in these discussions with WIPO reflects their dedication to navigating the complexities of the digital era. Their proactive approach in incorporating AI and other technological advancements in copyright management highlights their role in shaping a future that respects and safeguards intellectual property rights in a rapidly changing world.
