A WIPO workshop on Measures for Accession to, and Effective Use of, the Madrid System was held on March 8 – 9, 2012 in Tokyo, Japan, in cooperation with the Japan Patent Office (JPO) under the Japan Funds-in-Trust (IP). Officials from WIPO headquarters and the WIPO Japan Office moderated the workshop. Twenty-five senior government officials and IP community participants from fifteen countries that are not members of the Madrid System in the African, Asian, and Pacific regions attended. Speakers from Japan, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the JPO, WIPO headquarters, and the WIPO Japan Office presented case studies and their experiences to provide participants with an opportunity to learn about the procedural aspects of the Madrid System, the requirements of accession, the tasks involved in administration of the Madrid System, and to promote an understanding of the benefits of accession. Participants also presented the status of their country’ s trademark law and the relevant steps being taken for future accession to the Madrid System.
