WIPO Nigeria Launches Spoken Word Poetry Competition for Secondary Schools

March 15, 2023

As part of efforts to engage secondary school students with the World IP Day celebrations, the WIPO Nigeria Office has partnered with the team at Nasara Creative to organize a Spoken Word Poetry Competition for secondary schools within Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The competition themed “Intellectual Abundance” will afford students of secondary schools the opportunity to explore their creativity, ingenuity and stage confidence, while yet engaging with the theme of the World IP Day through spoken word artistry.

This year’s theme of “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity” puts the spotlight on the role that women play in driving innovation and creativity. It reflects on the challenges that women face in accessing the knowledge, skills, resources and support they need to thrive, and celebrates the can-do attitude of women, inventors, creators and entrepreneurs around the world and their groundbreaking work

A shortlist of top entries will be invited to perform at a Poetry Slam for Secondary Schools to be hosted by the WIPO Nigeria Office at the United Nations House, Abuja on May 13, 2023.

To participate, students are required to submit a one-minute poetry video, written and performed by the student to nigeria.office@wipo.int and nasaracreativeconsult@gmail.com with the subject title of the email as follows: initial.surname_WIPD23 Spoken Word Poetry Competition (e.g., G.Nduka_WIPD23 Spoken Word Poetry Competition).

Deadline for entries is April 3, 2023.

Female students are especially encouraged to apply.
