WIPO Russia Office Heads to Innovation Hub
September 30, 2015
On September 28, WIPO’s Director General Francis Gurry, together with the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, took part in an online conference on “ Technological Revolution. Russia’s Agenda” at which the Russian leader welcomed the move of the WIPO Russia Office to the Skolkovo Innovation Center, a high-technology research and business park near Moscow.
“We see the great progress that has been made in Skolkovo and we very much welcomed the invitation of the Russian authorities to establish an office in the Russian Federation,” Mr. Gurry said, adding “We think it is particularly important to be able to add our services in that context, given the extremely rich and long history of Russia’s involvement with science and contributions to science. Intellectual property can provide that mechanism which will assist in getting that strong tradition into the global marketplace.”
The conference was devoted to the fifth anniversary of the Skolkovo Innovation Center – a high-technology, fully integrated academic and business center just outside of Moscow. It was held as part of the preparations for the Open Innovations Forum, organized with the help of the Moscow authorities since 2012.
Russia’s Prime Minister and the Director General also exchanged opinions on the future of the international legal framework in the field of intellectual property in light of the evolution of the Internet and digital technologies.
Mr. Medvedev chairs the supervisory board of the Skolkovo Foundation, which is a non-profit organization created by the Russian Government for the implementation of the Skolkovo Innovation Center project. The Center is composed of over 1,000 companies and startups that are developing innovative technologies, a Technopark and the Skolkovo Institute of Technology (Skoltech), a new graduate research University established in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Center aims to establish a vibrant ecosystem of technology innovation and entrepreneurship.
The online conference was also attended by the following experts:
