WIPO-Russia Summer School on Intellectual Property

The annual WIPORussia Summer School on Intellectual Property was held in Kaliningrad from July 15 to 26, 2019.  The event, which was organized in cooperation with the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) and the Russian State Academy of Intellectual Property (RGAIS), was held at the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University.

Young professionals and students from the Russian Federation, Belarus and Syria attended the event learning about various aspects of intellectual property (IP) from WIPO representatives, patent researchers, teachers from major Russian universities, business representatives and other IP experts.

Mr. Giovanni Napolitano, Deputy Director of WIPO’s Department of Transition and Developed Countries, who was at the opening of the Summer School, noted its importance as a major tool for increasing IP awareness and its role in helping young professionals obtain valuable knowledge related to IP protection.

The Summer School, which was held in Russian, included practical seminars, business games and group discussions as well as analysis of case studies on various IP issues. Lectures covered the following topics:

  • copyright and related rights;
  • patents and trademarks;
  • IP as a business asset;
  • technology transfer and licensing;
  • protection of intellectual property rights;
  • IP management and commercialization.

At the end of the course, participants visited the Kaliningrad Chamber of Industry and Commerce.  All students successfully completed the course and received WIPO certificates from Mr. Zaurbek Albegonov, Senior Counsellor of the WIPO Office in the Russian Federation, and Ivan Bliznets, Rector, RGAIS, at the official closing ceremony.
