Singapore Celebrates IP Week
September 3, 2015
From August 24 to 28, Singapore celebrated " IP Week@SG" which featured the Global Forum on IP (GFIP), a number of WIPO-organized events and the participation of the WIPO Director General, Francis Gurry.
Mr. Gurry delivered a speech as part of the opening proceedings of the GFIP and also met with a range of stakeholders including the heads of IP Offices from all 10 ASEAN Members States, as well as heads from India, Bangladesh and Nepal. His program also included meetings with the Singaporean Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law, and the Cambodian Senior Minister and Minister of Industry and Handicrafts. A number of media outlets took the opportunity to interview Mr. Gurry following his speech that touched on the evolving architecture of the global IP system and the influence of major national IP systems. The Director General also met with a delegation of the International Trademark Association (INTA) led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Etienne Sanz de Acedo.
WIPO supported IP Week@SG through the organization of two major events. A WIPO exhibition booth was also featured as part of the ‘IP Fiesta’ display area. The focus of the exhibition was promotion of WIPO’s global services, the Arbitration and Mediation Centre Office in Singapore and WIPO’s IP Development Matchmaking Database. The second Heads of IP Offices Conference took place in Singapore to coincide with IP Week. Jointly organized with the Government of Singapore, the regional conference was for countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia, and explored the theme of heads of IP Offices as architects of an innovation ecosystem. Excellent feedback was received from the participants and there are plans for the concept to be continued in the future.
The second WIPO event during the week was the WIPO-IPOS Mediation Workshop entitled Win-Win in IP Disputes. The workshop featured presentations from staff of WIPO’s Arbitration and Mediation Center in Geneva and Singapore. The event was oversubscribed which resulted in a full house, indicating the level of interest in the event from in-house counsel handling IP or technology matters, IP owners and IP users with IP disputes and IP and dispute resolution lawyers.
Lastly, during the GFIP, two WIPO awards were presented by the Director General: the WIPO User’s Trophy was presented to Creative Technology Ltd, whilst Stratech Systems Ltd was awarded the WIPO IP Enterprise Trophy.
