Unleashing Momentum in Digital Transformation and SDG Implementation in Cambodia

April 30, 2024

On April 30, 2024, Cambodia celebrated the World IP Day 2024, which took place in Phnom Penh under the theme of “IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity”. Cambodia’s IP-driven journey has notably contributed greatly to the remarkable industrial expansion, innovation activities, and infrastructure construction along with inclusive growth and urban and community development (Goals 8 through 11), among many other SDG-related outcomes.

A series of IP projects were launched at the above celebration which was presided over by H.E. Mrs. Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce and Chairperson of the National Committee for Intellectual Property (NCIP) and H.E. Mr. Hem Vanndy, Minister of the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, with the participation of Ms. Thitapha Wattanapruttipaisan, Director of the WIPO Singapore Office. Those projects, several of which are from WIPO, relate to the provision of online digital public services designed to streamline the process of IP registration, IP Diagnostic Tool for Business, Skills-based Learning and Mentoring for Design School, and Moodle System for IP Distance Learning, just to name a few.

From now and into the future, local innovators and creators can access in real time the various related facilities and services and file their patents, trademarks, and designs with greater ease from anywhere in the country. In turn, all these will reduce significantly the processing times as well as ensure a smoother and more efficient handling matters relating to IP rights. WIPO has been and will be collaborating closely with Cambodia in the country’s concerted efforts to mobilize and synergize domestic and external resources and partnerships for SDG implementation, including through the building up of a conducive IP ecosystem in digital transformation, for the benefit of everyone, everywhere.
