Academy-Turin LL.M. Study Visit to WIPO
November 8, 2017
On October 17, 2017, 37 students from 30 countries currently taking part in the jointly-offered LL.M. in Intellectual Property (IP) by the WIPO Academy, the University of Turin, the International Training Center and the International Labor Organization embarked on a four-day visit to WIPO Headquarters in Geneva.
The students came to WIPO to learn about the organization and the most recent developments in the field of IP. The participants could also browse the books and publications available in the WIPO library. Additionally, they met with WIPO officials who were on hand to provide useful insights for their research.
We strongly encourage participants to meet with WIPO officials and access books from the WIPO library during the visit,” says Professor Alessandro Cogo, the Director of the LL.M. Program at the University of Turin.
The study visit was organized for the program’s 16th cohort.
The Turin Program is our flagship program for numerous reasons related to our prestigious partners, the content of the program, its history and the increasing number of applicants to the program.
Mr. Sherif Saadallah, WIPO Academy Executive Director
Which topics were covered?
The study visit entailed lectures from several WIPO officials on a range of IP topics including:
- Patents – New Developments in WIPO
- New Developments and Challenges of the PCT
- Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore
- Issues under Debate in the WIPO Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Designs and Geographical Indications
- Implementation of the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants
What our students are saying
The participants had a very positive reaction to the study visit.
During this study visit, I worked on my research and got some useful books from the WIPO library. The information available here is valuable for both my research and my studies. I also met with some of the authority figures in IP that work at WIPO.
Chinasa Stella Uwanna, a Senior Associate from Nigeria
What we were taught at Turin coincided with what was experienced at WIPO during the study visit. I know the WIPO-Turin LL.M. is the grandfather of all IP LL.M. programs, especially with regards to the caliber and quality of the speakers and lecturers. In the Pacific, the knowledge of IP is not deep enough. I see this program as contributing to acquiring the necessary knowledge for the IP Office in Samoa. This is part of taking it to the next level.
Houlton Faasau, Assistant Registrar at the Registries of Companies and Intellectual Properties at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labor of Samoa
The academic lectures and practical visits were very helpful, and we had access to a lot of books through the library.
