Mr. Sherif Saadallah, Executive Director of the WIPO Academy and Professor Chris Guthrie, Dean of the Vanderbilt University Law School, gave opening addresses at the start of the Congress on Monday August 26, 2019.

More than 120 academics and scholars from 34 countries took part in the Congress.  This year’s Congress covered a wide range of topics on the theme of “Recreating Copyright Law, Redesigning Design Law, Resourcing Trademark Law, and Reinventing Patent Law” and included presentations on the following topics:

  • Intellectual Property (IP), land and traditional knowledge;
  • Patent dilemmas;
  • Geographic indications in focus;
  • Interfaces with big data and artificial intelligence; and
  • The role of libraries and repositories in IP education and research.

The WIPO Academy also sponsored the participation of five academics at the ATRIP Annual Congress.  They came from China, Mexico, Oman, Serbia and South Africa.  As of 2019, 114 ATRIP participants from developing countries, least developed countries and countries with economies in transition, have benefited from this sponsorship.
