WIPO Academy Celebrates the 10-Year Anniversary of its IPTI Projects

August 14, 2020

In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the WIPO Academy’s Intellectual Property Training Institutions (IPTIs) projects, two online roundtables were held with partners in established and ongoing projects. The roundtables laid the groundwork for potential horizontal cooperation between IPTIs to share best practices and lessons learned, as well as to strengthen cooperation among partners. The IPTI representatives agreed to commence sharing information on needs-assessments and successful training delivery methodologies. Discussions also extended to the use of virtual networks to facilitate collaboration. The roundtable held in English took place on July 15, 2020, and the roundtable organized in Spanish took place on July 22, 2020.

Roundtable participants

Participants of the roundtable held in English included IPTI focal points and selected staff of established and ongoing projects with the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, and Ukraine. Focal points and selected staff from established and ongoing IPTI projects in Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Peru, alongside representatives from Panama and Ecuador, in an observer capacity, took part in the online roundtable held in Spanish the following week.

Future plans

The roundtable discussions included plans to create more opportunities for joint activities across projects, fora for discussion and exchange of information among IPTIs, and the strengthening of virtual networking spaces to facilitate regional and bilateral cooperation. Thanks to the roundtables, IPTIs now have an increased interest in organizing bilateral and multilateral meetings among themselves.
