WIPO Academy Supports Colombia with DL-730 Launch

December 3, 2021

Mr. Sherif Saadallah, Executive Director of the WIPO Academy, supported the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce of Colombia with their promotion and launch of the Executive Distance Learning Course on Intellectual Property and Exports (DL-730) in Colombia with a statement for the November edition of the “Ruta PI” newsletter.

Our collective goal is for the DL-730 to be used as a business tool among local enterprises in Colombia and the region. The DL-730 course is an important resource for small and medium sized enterprises and businesses, operating in the Latin American and Caribbean Region. It provides a practical skills-focused approach to address the common intellectual property challenges faced by exporters and export agency workers. It also explores specific national regulatory environments that facilitate business, trade and foreign direct investment in the region.

What is DL-730 course?

The DL-730 course was jointly developed by the WIPO Academy at the request of the governments of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico with the support of the WIPO Division for Latin America and the Caribbean. The course adopts a practical and skills-focused approach to addressing the common intellectual property (IP) challenges faced by exporters and export agency workers. The course explores the IP and export-related issues that arise in specific national regulatory environments for business, trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) within the Latin American and Caribbean Region.

Using real case studies, the course content guides participants on the cross-border and transnational matters that must be considered when protecting the IP of products and services. The case studies selected are relevant to industries considered regionally important for the export of goods and services, such as e-commerce, tourism, cultural arts, agriculture, fashion and software.

The course consists of six modules and a final written assessment covering a number of topics including:

  • IP & trade – real world cases and issues;
  • Obtaining rights abroad;
  • Licensing and selling licensed products and services abroad; and
  • FDI as an alternative way to exporting knowledge, goods and services.

Throughout the course, participants work towards building a practical checklist of activities that can be customized to their own export environment.

The DL-730 was designed with special features that allow the customization of the content for national use, including onsite training by IP offices and other national stakeholders such as export agencies.
