Apply Now: New International Patent Drafting Training Program

The inaugural session of the newly launched WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program is open for applications until January 31, 2022. The inaugural session is scheduled to start on March 20, 2022.

The new program was developed in collaboration with the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI) to enhance the knowledge and skills of professionals who wish to strengthen their patent drafting skills.

The inaugural session will be held in English.

What does the program include?

The training program is composed of the following three phases and a final evaluation:

Phase 1: Drafting Basics – 10 weeks of distance learning on the fundamentals of drafting claims through expert-facilitated discussions and exercises.
Phase 2: Workshop – a five-day workshop held at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, focused on improving technology-related patent drafting skills and the practices of different jurisdictions.
Phase 3: Mentoring – 12 weeks of online mentoring by high-level experts, including tailor-made advanced patent drafting exercises for each participant’s field of expertise.

Upon the successful completion of the program, participants will be awarded a WIPO certificate.

Who should apply?

Applications are open to practicing or prospective patent agents; staff of technology transfer offices at universities, public research centers or WIPO Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs); individuals regularly involved in supporting inventors obtain patents; and innovators, researchers, and members of the public wishing to enhance their patent drafting skills.
