The training program for the Egyptian judiciary was launched following discussions between WIPO Director General Daren Tang and Counselor Omar Marwan, the Egyptian Minister of Justice in March 2022.

A course for judges by judges

Participants completed the tailor-made hybrid / distance learning (DL) course on IP for judges, which was delivered by three expert judges in the capacity of tutors headed by Egyptian Judge Bassem Awad. The course is a pre-requisite for further advanced training by WIPO in collaboration with the Copyright Sector and Division for Arab Countries. The tailor-made course was finalized with a record-breaking 91% completion rate.

Through instructionally designed learning materials supported by 56 real-world cases, the course covered a range of topics including:

  • copyright and related rights of artistic works in the entertainment industry in the context of the digital revolution and the spread of the internet ;
  • the challenges of copyright principles in the software development industry;
  • trademarks and issues arising from domain-name squatting; and
  • the relationship between patents and advances in biotechnology and genetics with regards to the long-standing practices of courts.
