December 14, 2022

The WIPO Academy is proud to announce that two of its Intellectual Property Training Institutions (IPTIs) projects have officially been in established in the Dominican Republic and Saudi Arabia. This achievement brings the total number of established IPTIs to 14. The WIPO Academy will continue to work with the established IPTIs to help support their long-term sustainability through ad hoc cooperation.

The Training and Development Center of the National Copyright Office of the Dominican Republic (ONDA) officially launched following the conclusion of the last training of trainers (ToT) program on November 18, 2022, and the graduation ceremony of 25 designated trainers on December 13, 2022.

To establish the Training and Development Center, WIPO Academy assisted ONDA with curricula development, the provision of books for their library, the development of an educational campaign on copyright, and ToT activities on core topics including:

  • Basic teaching methodologies;
  • Copyright and related rights, and their challenges in technology;
  • Collective management of copyright and related rights; and
  • Advanced training methodologies.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the ToTs were delivered virtually. The Training and Development Center is now offering trainings to local beneficiaries on copyright and creative industries such as fashion, video games and music to name a few.

Saudi Arabia

The WIPO Academy started working on the IPTI project with the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) in 2019. On September 18, 2022 the graduation ceremony for the SAIP Intellectual Property (IP) Academy was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia marking the official establishment of the IPTI. A total of 33 trainers were officially certified by WIPO at the graduation ceremony following the completion of four online trainings on topics such as:

  • Basic teaching methodologies;
  • Industrial property;
  • Copyright and related rights; and
  • Advanced teaching methodologies.

The SAIP IP Academy has been delivering trainings to local beneficiaries from the public and private sectors and academia since 2020, and successfully organized 177 training activities in 2021 for 20,642 participants. Three of the training activities dedicated to growing domestic economic sectors delivered by the SAIP IP Academy in 2022 were supported by the WIPO Academy, specifically on geographical indications for producers of origin-linked products; on the film industry; and IP enforcement in Saudi Arabia.

The WIPO Academy will continue to support the SAIP IP Academy in 2023 under the framework of the WIPO COVID-19 support package by organizing a training program on IP commercialization and monetization for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and a new self-paced IP course on technology focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and IP.
