Open for Applications: Second Edition of the WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program
January 23, 2023
The second edition of the WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program (IPDTP) is open for applications until February 20, 2023. The session is scheduled to start on April 3, 2023.
The program was developed by WIPO in collaboration with the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI) to enhance the knowledge and skills of professionals who wish to strengthen their patent drafting skills. Participants get to learn about claim drafting techniques and methodologies, specification drafting for inventions, analysis of inventions, and strategic filing decisions.
What does the program include?
The training program, which will be held in English, is composed of the following three phases and a final evaluation:
Phase 1: Drafting Basics – tutor-led online modules on the fundamentals of drafting claims and the specification through expert-facilitated discussions and exercises.
Phase 2: Workshop – a workshop held at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland delivered by patent experts, with a focus on improving patent drafting skills and the practices of different jurisdictions.
Phase 3: Mentoring – online mentoring by high-level experts, including tailor-made advanced patent drafting exercises for each participant’s field of expertise. Participants will have a unique opportunity to directly interact and seek hands-on advice from instructors through mentoring.
Upon the successful completion of the program participants will receive a WIPO certificate.

What our participants are saying?
"The drafting program had different phases to equip participants with the basics and to allow hands-on learning. The in-person workshop was particularly engaging, with experienced tutors who were able to guide participants from diverse IP backgrounds. Participants were encouraged to take part in all aspects of the workshop which covered the fundamentals of patent drafting, drafting itself and included mock scenarios in which the validity of the drafted claims were tested."

"The International Patent Drafting Training Program jointly developed by WIPO and FICPI has broadened my professional horizon enormously and focused my attention on the crucial aspects of efficient IP protection. As a result, this effectively enriches my way of working. I am very grateful to the committed and extremely versed tutors! Moreover, a great - certainly lasting - international network of like-minded people has emerged who are engaged in patent drafting worldwide."
