Thirty-six students from this year’s cohort of the Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Intellectual Property (IP) jointly offered by the WIPO Academy, the University of Turin, the Turin School of Management (SAA) and the Consortium for Research and Permanent Education (COREP) came to the WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, for a study visit from May 30 to June 2, 2023.
The study visit was a great opportunity for the graduate students to learn about the latest developments in IP from WIPO experts, as well as to consult on their research topics for the final dissertation, and network with alumni of the program who are currently working at WIPO. The students, representing 26 different countries, met with the WIPO divisions handling their respective countries and regional groups to hear more about the IP ecosystems and ongoing projects in each region. The study visit also allowed the students to use the WIPO Knowledge Center to further their research.
Which topics were covered during the study visit?
The study visit included interactive lectures, group discussions, and question and answer sessions with WIPO experts on a range of IP related issues and developments including:
Patents and trade secrets;
New developments discussed in the Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (SCT) (including the implementation of the Madrid, Hague, and Lisbon Agreements in Member States);
IP and frontier technologies (the Metaverse);
Copyright in the digital world; and
IP disputes, arbitration and mediation.
What our students are saying?
"As a professional specializing in the field of IP, the opportunity to undertake the study visit to WIPO Headquarters was one of the most enriching and enlightening experiences of the LL.M in IP program. Participating in in-person lectures and panel discussions with WIPO experts provided me with the opportunity to understand deeply how the global intellectual property forum and its harmonized system for rewarding creativity and stimulating innovation works. Experiencing first-hand the daily work and commitment of WIPO and its Academy deeply inspired me in my career as an IP lawyer."
— Maricel Mengoni, Argentina
"As part of the LL.M in IP law jointly offered by WIPO and the University of Turin, we had the pleasure of visiting the renowned WIPO Headquarters in Geneva. The study visit was educationally rewarding as it offered deep insights into the field of intellectual property administration, promotion, and policy advisory services from a global perspective. Moreover, the visit was such a culturally enriching experience as it provided me with an opportunity to engage with top specialists who are actively working across different IP rights and committed to enhancing a balanced and effective international IP system across different IP regimes. The incorporation of the study visit in the LL.M. program is transformative and a valuable experience for the next generation of IP scholars and practitioners."
