Mr. Sherif Saadallah, Executive Director of the WIPO Academy, undertook a high-level visit to Lima, Peru from April 8 to 11, 2024 to discuss ongoing and future collaboration in the area of intellectual property (IP) education, training and skills-building with key partners.
Mr. Saadallah and the WIPO Academy delegation met with Mr. Sergio Gonzáles Guerrero, the Minister of Production of Peru, and Mr. John Peter Camino Cannock, Peru’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. Meetings were held with high-level officials from both institutions, in addition to the Peruvian National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi); the Peruvian National Council of Science, Technology and Technological Innovation (CONCYTEC); and representatives from the technology and innovation support centers (TISCs) network.
Mr. Saadallah and the WIPO Academy delegation addressed ongoing and future projects in Peru, such as:
All joint projects between the WIPO Academy and Peru are facilitated by Indecopi and its IP School, which is a WIPO Intellectual Property Training Institution (IPTI).
During the visit, Indecopi and the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also presented a number of joint IP projects they are delivering to support local communities beyond the capital, including the creation of a guide on the value of IP for Peruvian rural communities.
The official visit to Lima, Peru also coincided with the launch of the tailored version of the WIPO Academy’s landmark General Distance Learning Course on Intellectual Property (DL-101) for the Andean Community. The course was developed by the WIPO Academy and the General Secretariat of the Andean Community to cover the basics of IP in the context of legislation and examples relevant to the Andean Community.
Registration for the new tailored course, which is offered in Spanish, is open until August 30, 2024 on the WIPO eLearning Center.
