Third WINIPE Colloquium Promises Moot Competitions in WIPO Joint Master’s Programs

June 27, 2024

The third edition of the WIPO International Network for Intellectual Property Education (WINIPE) colloquium was held virtually from June 13 to 14, 2024, bringing together 27 deans, academic directors and seasoned alumni from the 18 WIPO Joint Master’s Programs.

The WINIPE colloquium offered participants an opportunity to explore ways to enhance the joint master’s programs on offer for future cohorts and to ensure that the curriculum and teaching methodologies applied are aligned with the current intellectual property (IP) education landscape.

What did the WINIPE colloquium cover?

Through expert-led presentations and discussions, participants covered ways to enhance teaching methodologies and skills-development of the programs, particularly in the areas of:

  • Teaching methodologies using artificial intelligence (AI)
  • IP teaching strategies for developing countries
  • Applied knowledge and skills-building methodologies

Some of the conclusions of the colloquium included commitments from the deans and academic directors of the WIPO Joint Master’s Programs to integrate moot competitions into the existing curricula to strengthen students’ practical skills in handling IP cases, provide access to real-time case trackers in academic resources to allow students to monitor ongoing global IP and AI litigation, and incorporate inter-disciplinary courses, such as IP business, into future curricula. Additionally, a working group comprising students and alumni of the Joint Master’s Program will be set up to organize a WINIPE webinar.

The third edition of the annual WINIPE Colloquium was an excellent opportunity for academic exchange and sharing insights to enhance the quality of our Master’s programs. This year, I was particularly delighted with the innovative experiences and ideas presented by deans and directors, and it was inspiring to hear insights from some of our graduates on the use of AI and new technologies for teaching IP.
