Empowering Africa: Celebrating the 16th Master’s IP at Africa University

Since its inception in 2008, the Joint Master’s in Intellectual Property (MIP) program at Africa University has stood as an example of excellence in intellectual property (IP) education, fostering a new generation of leaders across the African continent. In collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), and with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global), this program has consistently delivered exceptional results, leaving a profound impact on both individuals and communities.
Unveiling the journey
The MIP program commenced its journey on March 1, 2008, marking the beginning of a transformative educational endeavour. Combining distance learning, classroom teaching, and practical training at ARIPO, this innovative approach ensures that graduates not only possess theoretical knowledge but also practical skills vital for academia, government, and industry. As the WIPO's longest-running Joint Master's Degree Program in the African Region, it has continually evolved to meet the dynamic demands of the IP landscape.
A testament to excellence
The 16th MIP program, spanning from May 1, 2023, to April 30, 2024, witnessed the participation of 40 highly motivated students hailing from 17 African countries. Through the generous support of FIT/Japan IP Global, 12 scholarships were awarded, enabling students to pursue their graduate studies in IP with zeal and dedication. The program's comprehensive curriculum, enriched by esteemed academicians, legal practitioners, and IP experts, provided students with an in-depth understanding of various IP domains, aligning their expertise with the unique needs of the African region.
During the residential phase, Mr. Shoichi Okuyama, a distinguished Patent Attorney from Okuyama & Sasajima, Tokyo, shared invaluable insights on patent drafting, further enhancing the practical acumen of participants.

The graduation ceremony, held at Africa University on June 8, 2024, marked a significant milestone as all students successfully completed the program, poised to embark on their journey as advocates for IP awareness, utilization, and protection across Africa.
