Curriculum Vitae Mr. William K. Slate II
Mr. William K. Slate II is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Arbitration Association. He is the former President of the Justice Research Institute, and the former Director of the Federal Courts Study Committee.
Mr. Slate has practiced and taught law, and lectured widely on law and administration and management as a visiting professor at Seton Hall Law School, at Virginia Union University and at the Consortium of Law Schools in New York City, among others, and before numerous state and federal bar organizations. He was the first-ever consultant to the senior staff of the Supreme Court of the United States on strategic planning. He has also been an executive in both the Third and Fourth Federal Circuits.
Some of Mr. Slates other professional activities include: being an elected member of the American Law Institute; a member of the American Bar Association; a Vice President of the American Judicature Society; a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Management Association and being the chairman of its Executive and Finance Committees; a member of the National Task Force to review the Federal Rulemaking Process, and a member of the Pennsylvania Futures Commission on Justice in the 21st Century. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in England, a member of the Arbitrator and Mediator Panels of the International Court of Sport in Switzerland, and the International Commercial Arbitration Court at the Ukraine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Mr. Slate has been a featured speaker at many judicial, legal, and business conferences worldwide including keynote and other presentations to the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and Federal Circuit Judicial Conferences. He has been published in numerous professional publications including The American Lawyer, The ABA Journal, New York Law Journal, Legal Times of Washington and Federal Rules Decisions. He has also authored chapters in books such as Arbitragem Comercial Internacional (Brazil 1998). He is currently the chairman of the Advisory Board of the World Arbitration and Mediation Report and a member of the Board of ADR.World.com.
He conceived and founded CAMCA (The Commercial Arbitration and Mediation Center for the Americas) for the resolution of private party commercial disputes under the NAFTA accords. He was a founder and board member of the Council for Court Excellence in Washington, D.C. Most recently he conceived and founded the Global Center for Dispute Resolution Research. The Center is the first such research entity in the world and commenced operations in the fall of 1999. He is a member of its Board.
Mr. Slate holds an M.B.A degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Richmond Law School and a BA degree from Wake Forest University where he was a Poteat Scholar. He is admitted to practice law in the Supreme Court of the United States, the Third and Fourth Federal Circuits, and the Virginia State Courts.
