Regional Meeting on Women in IP Commercialization in Asia
March 14, 2019
A regional meeting dedicated to women in intellectual property (IP) commercialization took place in Manila, Philippines, on October 24 to 26, 2018.
The Meeting was funded by WIPO’s Australia Funds-in-Trust for intellectual property (Australia FIT/IP).
A list of root causes was adopted at the end of the event with the objective of developing recommendations to help address any imbalance in terms of the participation of women in IP commercialization in a sustainable manner.
More on the event
The event focused on women professionals involved in knowledge transfer and IP commercialization in Asia, as well as on women researchers and CEOs of businesses based on technologies developed in Asian academic institutions from Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
One of the objectives of the meeting was to present and discuss with a broader regional professional audience the results of two WIPO/FIT Australia reports on women and IP commercialization in Asia (will be available in June 2019). As the event also aimed to identify whether there is an imbalance in terms of the participation of women in IP commercialization in the Asia Pacific region, its nature and how such an imbalance could be quantified and measured.
This meeting was the first of this kind as well as being the first gender-related activity to take place under the auspices of Australia FIT/IP.
The positive outcome was confirmed by the readiness of participants to explore the status of the issue in their environment and to develop reports that leverage the experience and methodology developed by experts from the Philippines and Sri Lanka. A list of initial recommendations on a policy level was adopted with a view to influencing policies – in particular incentive polices – in the region and to encouraging women to take an active part in IP commercialization for the benefit of their societies.
Australia FIT/IP develops
This event represents an important diversification of the issues covered by the Australia FIT/IP. It is the first time that Australia FIT/IP activities have extended beyond capacity building and the Australia FIT/IP has now established its role in the promotion of gender balanced knowledge transfer in Asia.
