On October 27 and 28, 2022, WIPO, together with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), co-organized a sub-regional seminar on IP enforcement in the digital environment for government and law enforcement officials from ASEAN countries. The event was held in Manila, the Philippines and was undertaken in cooperation with the ASEAN Secretariat and the Japan Patent Office (JPO) with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global).
The objectives of the seminar were to exchange experiences on national and transnational strategies for effective cooperation and coordination to address trademark counterfeiting and copyright piracy in the digital environment; to shed light on certain voluntary measures adopted by e-commerce platforms and to build the capacity, knowledge and expertise of law enforcement officials and other government officials.
The seminar welcomed approximately 75 participants both in-person and online from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The seminar was opened by Mr. J. Todd Reves, Director, Building Respect for IP Division, Global Challenges and Partnerships Sector, on behalf of WIPO; Atty. Rowel S. Barba, Director General, IPOPHL, Chair, ASEAN Working Group on IP Cooperation; and Mr. SUGIYAMA Takuya, Director, Anti-Counterfeit Office, International Cooperation Division, JPO (online).
The seminar was conducted in an interactive manner and characterized by constructive discussions and valuable exchanges of experiences, thanks to a rich set of presentations delivered by four local speakers invited by IPOPHIL and four international speakers invited by WIPO, namely Ms. Monica Pop, Prosecutor, Prosecutor’s Office, Romania; Mr. James Yoon, International Computer Hacking & IP Attorney Advisor for Asia, Unites States Department of Justice (online); Mr. Jun Okubo, General Manager Legal Affairs, IP Department, Yonex, Tokyo; and Mr. Yosuke Sugata, Manager, IP Department, Canon, Singapore.
