We held a face-to-face regional workshop for Brazil and Chile, from February 28 to March 2, 2023, in Rio de Janeiro at WIPO Brazil Office. The event was organized with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global.
The objective of the workshop was to provide participants with an overview of technology transfer and develop skills for a general framework and negotiation of Technological Development Collaboration Agreements (TDCA), particularly on the strategic use of IP to support business objectives focused on the agricultural sector, by a group of stakeholders in Brazil and Chile.
Before the in-person workshop, an online session was held from February 6 to 9, with 35 participants, 23 from Brazil and 12 from Chile. The online session encompassed subjects such as: (i) Objectives and IP Strategy; (ii) financial terms; and (iii) WIPO IP tools to support technology transfer and IP Commercialization. In addition, the audience also had insights from Japan’s experience with technology collaboration in the agricultural sector from a Japan Patent Office official.
The 3-day workshop was held with 29 participants in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: 17 from Brazil and 12 from Chile. The main issues covered by the face-to-face workshop were: (i) Ownership and license grants in technology licensing and development agreements; (ii) the subject matter of technology licensing and development agreements; (iii) IP valuation in licensing deals; and (iv) the skills negotiation game itself. It also included presentations of different experts in the IP commercialization field, including an IP attaché from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), São Paulo.
After such a fruitful capacity-building training, the participants mentioned they would share the knowledge and lessons learned with their institutional communities and highlighted the importance of sharing experiences, good practices, and learnings to develop technological development collaboration agreements.
