The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) organized the meeting in collaboration with the Algerian National Institute of Industrial Property, Ministry of Industry of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria and Japan Patent Office with the financial support from the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global in Algiers, Algeria, on May 23 and 24, 2023.
The purpose of this regional meeting was to review and discuss: (i) new developments in WIPO’s support to TISCs and associated national and regional networks and; (ii) new developments in national TISC networks in the Arab countries. The regional meeting also provided an opportunity to share experiences and best practices among the national TISC focal persons.
The meeting was opened by Mr. Abdelhafid Belmehdi, Director General, Algerian National Institute of Industrial Property, Ministry of Industry, Algiers, Mr. Walid Abdelnasser, Director, Division for Arab Countries, Regional and National Development Sector, on behalf of WIPO, and Ambassador Mr. Akira Kono, Embassy of Japan in Algeria.
18 national TISC focal points and officials from 9 Arab countries (Algeria, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine and the Syrian Arab Republic) and 1 representative from each of the League of Arab States and the Gulf Cooperation Council Patent Office participated in the meeting.
TISC focal points shared their experiences, challenges and best practices in setting up TISC networks in their respective countries. They reflected on their management experience, network governance and technical and financial resources. They discussed and agreed on an Arab TISC Regional Action Plan that will further be elaborated by each participating country and reviewed in six months’ time.
