ASEAN Industrial Designs Formalities Workshop on Website optimization and development of customer-centric content and Meeting of the Industrial Designs Task Force (IDTF)

January 30, 2024

The Industrial Designs workshop and meeting took place at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from November 29 to December 1, 2023, organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat, with the support of the Japan Patent Office (JPO) via the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global.

The capacity-building workshop was the first step to enable and assist ASEAN Member States (AMS) IP Offices to optimize their websites and develop user responsive content, with particular focus on industrial designs. To achieve ASEAN’s goal to harmonize and further simplify the design formality requirements of AMS, the IP Offices’ websites are the starting point for information sharing with customers especially concerning their design registration systems, including formality requirements.

In total, nine AMS participants (Brunei Darussalam (online), Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia (as host), Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam) and the ASEAN Secretariat joined the workshop, which was very well received by the participants.

Taking place back-to-back with the workshop was the 4th Meeting of the ASEAN Industrial Design Task Force (4th IDTF), which was attended by Industrial Designs experts from the respective IP Offices of the AMS. The Meeting discussed the outcomes and next steps after the completion of the workshop and also on the progress of Designs related deliverables under the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2016-2025.
