The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) held a regional meeting in collaboration with the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Lao People's Democratic Republic, on March 21 and 22, 2024 with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global.
The purpose of the regional meeting was to review and discuss: (i) new developments in WIPO’s support to TISCs and associated national and regional networks; (ii) the ASEAN Working Group on Intellectual Property (AWGIPC) IPR Action Plan 2016-2025, in particular Initiative 8.1; and (iii) new developments in national TISC networks in ASEAN member states.
The Conference was opened by the Director General of the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Mr. Xaysomphet Norasingh and the Director of the Technology and Innovation Support Division, IP for Innovators Department, WIPO, Mr. Andrew Czajkowski. Ms. Sachiyo Yoshino, Director, International Cooperation Division, Japan Patent Office delivered her opening remarks in the form of a video message.
The meeting was attended by approximately 35 participants from 9 ASEAN member states: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam, and provided them with the opportunity to share information on the current status and recent developments in their national TISC networks.
The meeting also included a special session for longer established national TISC networks to share with the newer TISC networks in the ASEAN region their experiences and solutions in selecting TISC host institutions, building commitment, and maintaining engagement from TISC host institutions.
The meeting ended with a roundtable to discuss opportunities for strengthening regional cooperation among TISC networks in the ASEAN region, including through the ASEAN Secretariat and specific initiatives related to TISCs that could be leveraged to strengthen regional approaches to some of the challenges TISC networks in the region are facing.
