Training Program on Patent Information and Technology Databases in Lao People’s Democratic Republic

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) organized a training program on Patent Information and Technology Databases for the Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs) in collaboration with the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Industry and Commerce of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global in Vientiane, Lao PDR on March 18 and 19, 2024.

The purpose of this training program was to support the development of knowledge and skills on patent information search strategies and techniques of current and prospective TISC host institutions in Lao PDR.

About the program

The meeting was opened by Mr. Makha Chanthala, Deputy Director General of the Department of Intellectual Property of Lao PDR, and Mr. Andrew Czajkowski, Director, Technology and Innovation Support Division, IP for Innovators Department, WIPO. Ms. Sachiyo Yoshino, Director, International Cooperation Division, Japan Patent Office delivered her opening remarks in the form of a video message.

It was attended by over 40 participants from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, universities, and polytechnic colleges. Participants developed their knowledge of patents and patent databases and their skills in carrying out patent searches. The program was also an opportunity to re-introduce the TISC concept and its services to other stakeholders in the country and discuss with national partners the way forward as far as the development of the national TISC network in Lao PDR.
